Permaculture Design: Raised Beds and Food Forest
Framed by historic live oak trees in cozy Lockhart, limestone raised beds and a mandala-designed food forest honor resourceful permaculture tenets to nourish families and wildlife. New gardener Donna Daniels and husband Len Gabay grew from Austin Permaculture Guild co-director Taelor Monroe’s design and berm and swales that direct rainwater to perennial food, flowers, and fruit trees.

Why Do Prairies Matter?
Просмотров 312Месяц назад
Blackshear Elementary student Adler Asher explores why prairies disappeared and why restoration now matters so much to our future ecology. Prairies are great at locking carbon in the soil as soil organic carbon. They support prairie dogs that in turn support the endangered black-footed ferret and prairie chicken. Because many prairie plants have deep roots, they help stabilize soil and conserve...

I learned to my sorrow last summer that even natives need watering. We are now in our third year of extreme drought, and im watering.
My peach tree has not flowered in a couple of years after we had a strong freeze in Houston. Can you recommend what you think I need to do to help my tree? Thank you for any help.
❤❤
Mike Lung from.Domino s pizza! ...and muntaner street!
That Texas tortoise was almost certainly removed from its natural range by someone in the past
I’m surprised they can’t grow barrel cactus but they have huge Opuntia gomei “old mexico” They can’t take a deep freeze
Love the raised beds, Donna!
Love it! Your garden inspires me everyday!
Wonderful imagination to create art and the garden, I like the talent of both😊
Love it 😍
BEAUTIFUL garden. Omg how amazing to do that in three years.
Beautiful gardens 🤠
makes permaculture look a bit airy fairy which it is not.
Quarried stone raised beds? NICE!
Those beds are to die for! 🤩
Thank you ❤
Thank you ❤
Thank you ❤
Thanks-so helpful! And happy to know what plants are pollinators since we’re losing an alarming amount of bees. I have LOTS of flame acanthus which volunteer themselves to about a half acre of our 3 acres. I live in Bastrop county and grow everything by seed or cuttings. Do you have a video on growing by seeds and cuttings? Or do you know where I can learn more? Thanks!
Thank you ❤

I have praying mantis in my garden will these kill it
thank you. Loved the puppy in addition :)
I live in Texas so this was very helpful. Do you recommend a certain potting soil? I had heard it is better not to get one with fertilizer in it.
Gosh, I wouldn't want to push brands! I'd say to look at the ingredients. Definitely for succulents you want something that's more gritty and good-draining. I'd go to a nursery rather than a box store, too, and ask.
@@CentralTexasGardener Thank you!
How different are the blackland prairies of Texas compared to the ones in Midwest
What a great question! It is the same prairie soil, as I understand. The temperature and amount of rain can change. Beautiful prairie designer, Kelly Norris, author of New Naturalism, has a gorgeous front yard Blackland Prairie in Iowa. We grow a lot of the same plants, but bloom times and dormancy may differ.
Great Lady,,,,,, she knows Joy in nature,,,,,,,,,,, and the best part,,,,,,,,,,,it's everywhere, all around us!!!!!
how is temple? I live there, I would love to meet you at a local farmer market
I love Green N Growing and Liz always has the best advice!! So wonderful to see her on the show!
are these wild flowers and wild plants?
Some are considered "wildflowers." Most are native plants: perennials, some annuals, groundcovers, grasses, and trees.
Linda, you are a truly wonderful communicator, writer and narrator, I must say… especially on your gardens-on-tour videos, where your descriptions (and soothing voice!) truly capture the "essence" of each property! From certain unique plants or planting schemes, yard art pieces, and any construction. sustainability or accessibility projects the gardeners have undertaken, and more. Your words show your passion when compared to some other gardeners in the media. Thank you for CTG.
Thank you so very much! Thank you for watching!
This was sooooo helpful! Green N Growing is our favorite nursery. Thanks for sharing.
Texas law prohibits HoAs from preventing the use of native flora.
Leaves of 5; keep it alive.
Good one!
Absolutely gorgeous ❤❤❤❤❤
I have a septic tank, I am unsure where the septic field actually is. But unfortunately Bermuda is what was used as the lawn, I'm in the process of getting rid of it all through manually digging it up and cardboard and wood chips.
Seems like they didn’t even waste money making a raised flower bed! That’s great! They just used bricks.. wondering if they dug out the dirt and filled it with purchased soil or just mulched it? Anyone have any guesses? I really want to make a simple bed for plants🙂
If you don’t want to dig out a slightly raised bed, you could top dress with compost and cover with mulch!
5 years old and exactly what I needed to see. For sure going to wrap with wood over painting. Thanks Daniel!!
Man, great episode y'all.
Can I grow bamboo in Houston
Check your local nurseries. I don't know why not.
❤❤❤ life goals right here
I don't believe I entirely understand why someone would allow a problem to happen in hopes of letting the solution to that problem show up, eat, and lay eggs.
Beautiful video. I love seeing a tutorial on the use of wonderful and healing herbs.
NO one is going to all that.
You’re so wrong, friend. There are many of us out here who do all that. 😉
Yes! And thank you!
Sure they will! Not everyone, indeed, but not "everyone" does "everything."
Great insight for those tough soils.
Excellent video! I am excited to visit Liz's nursery now
A) love your dress! B) Always need ways to use up my herbs! I may have to plant lemon balm. I have tons of mint😂. Next trip to Austin, will have to check out the facility.
What an interesting video😮
Marvelous, the best landscape design I've seen!
Luv it all
